R. Kelly, Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette join contestants on their final night of performances.
By Adam Graham

At the outset of Wednesday's (December 21) 90-minute "The X Factor" performance finale, which pitted three singers — Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro — against one another for a $5 million recording contract, judge Simon Cowell predicted, "I think this is going to be the closest final we've ever had."

By the end of the penultimate show, Cowell made it clear who had his vote to win, and unsurprisingly, it was the singer he mentored in the race, Melanie Amaro. Following Amaro's second song, a rendition of Beyoncé's "Dreamgirls" ballad "Listen," Cowell gave up all pretense of objectivity and threw his weight behind the singer, whom he at one point cut from the competition before reconsidering and allowing her back in after making a personal visit to her home.

"I brought this show to America because I believe some of the greatest singers in the world are from this country, and you just proved that," he told the 19-year-old from Sunrise, Florida. "I think you, based on that performance tonight, to me, should be the winner of 'The X Factor,' because you're going to represent this country all over the world."

Earlier in the show, Amaro performed a duet of "I Believe I Can Fly" with R. Kelly, which marked Kelly's first performance since undergoing throat surgery earlier this year. Amaro held her own with the singer, but Kells stole the spotlight with his effortless vocal gymnastics, on what was called his first-ever duet of his 1996 smash. For his part, Kells called Amaro "unbelievable," and said, "There's no doubt in my mind this girl is on her way to the moon." While L.A. Reid criticized Amaro for not performing well in the song's key, Cowell backed her 100 percent, calling the performance "close to godly."

Chris Rene, a 28-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, shared the stage early on with Avril Lavigne, as the two performed Lavigne's hit "Complicated" together, complete with a new rap from Rene. Rene's second song was "Young Homie," a song he penned and sang during the audition process and again on the November 22 episode, when he mixed it with the Beatles' "Let It Be."

He earned high marks from the judges, with Paula Abdul dubbing his "Young Homie" performance "magic," while calling Rene — who celebrated his eighth month of sobriety on Tuesday — the "consummate singer-songwriter-performer." "You make everyone fall in love with you!" she beamed. Cowell called him a "brilliant" performer, adding he's a "true gentleman" and a "really nice guy."

Josh Krajcik, a 30-year-old self-described "burrito slinger" from Columbus, Ohio, opened the show with Alanis Morissette, as the two took on her 1998 hit "Uninvited." Krajcik was visibly nervous while sharing the stage with Morissette but was much more in his element during his second song, when he stripped away all the fancy production cues and did "At Last" alone with his guitar. That performance was hailed as a return to form from the judges.

"This is what we liked about you in the first place," said Cowell, while Krajcik's mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, praised his consistency throughout the competition. "You have delivered in every single performance," she told him.

The winner will be crowned on Thursday's two-hour finale, which is set to feature appearances by Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Leona Lewis, Pitbull and Ne-Yo.

What did you think of the "X Factor" finale? Sound off in the comments!

Pop singer sings ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’ for Amnesty International anniversary album.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's hard to associate Ke$ha with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's Chimes of Freedom compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.

When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her all-star remix of "Sleazy," she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right."

"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and … one of the most amazing lyricists as well — the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have."

K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right."

Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined.

"This song was kind of an accident. I sat down and this is the first take that I ever sang," she recalled. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record."

In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. The album pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.

It may be a few years before a new album emerges, but there will be new music from Adele in 2012.
By Gil Kaufman

Could Adele be the next Bond girl? Not, like, in the movie, but on the soundtrack at least? The singer said in a recent interview that she will release a new single in 2012, which set off speculation that she might join the impressive likes of past Bond movie singers Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Madonna, Garbage and Jack White with Alicia Keys as the sound of the upcoming 23rd 007 flick, "Skyfall."

Speaking to France's NRJ radio, Adele said a "new song is coming out probably by the end of the year." Though no news has been announced, British oddsmakers have been saying that Adele is the favorite to provide the all-important title tune to the next Bond adventure, which is due in theaters on November 9.

In the meantime, the singer also revealed that she doesn't expect to have a follow-up to her global smash 21
in stores for several years. "If I didn't write my own songs, I'd be out next week with a new album," she said. "I have to take time and live a little bit. There were a good two years between my first and second albums, so it'll be the same this time."

With 21 still resting comfortably near the top of charts all around the world thanks to global sales in excess of 20 million, the singer said she's not worried about capturing that same magic in a bottle the next time around. "I don't think I'll feel the pressure for the next album to be as big as the last one because I know that's not really possible," she said. "What's happened with this album is very rare anyway."

Adele may have given a small preview of what the next album will sound like, though, when she revealed that her dream duet partner would be Beyoncé. "I adore Beyoncé, I've been listening to her since I was about 11," she said. "I think her work as an artist and a singer is enviable in terms of the length of her career and how she's grown and grown but most of my inspirations are (from) old music and sadly they have all died."

With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be.
By James Montgomery

By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of "The X Factor," he cleared the chamber — casting off judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger (not to mention host Steve Jones) — and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition.

Of course, just who Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His $15 million deal with Britney Spears appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne to join the "X Factor" team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on "various perks"? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the "Factor"? Really, your guess is as good as ours.

Needless to say, we're not sure who will be joining the "X Factor" panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at all of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we want the "X Factor" to succeed … lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment.

Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the "X Factor" hopefuls:

Britney Spears
Strengths: Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on any U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a "career" and a "contemporary" artist, giving the show an answer to "Idol" 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination and the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on "The Voice." As a bonus, she would also fill the "rambling" slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the "thousand-mile stare" void left when Scherzinger got the boot.

Weaknesses:
It's Britney: Live TV may not exactly suit her.

Demi Lovato
Strengths: At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker
for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of harrowing backstory that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points.

Weaknesses: Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of "Sonny with a Chance" when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon.

Miley Cyrus
Strengths: An established star (with a slightly checkered past), which would give "X Factor" the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like "The Climb" and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. Could also use the show as a way of launching the next phase of her career, which would be mutually beneficial and might just spawn something like the certified "Voice" smash "Moves Like Jagger."

Weaknesses: May currently be better known for her paparazzi coverage than her actual music. Might take another hit of salvia and confuse every male contestant with Liam.

Avril Lavigne
Strengths: Has been at it for a while now, has more genuine hits than anyone except Spears. She's also got previous judging experience and seems to be genuinely concerned with her artistic integrity. And although her Goodbye Lullaby album didn't match the commercial heights of her previous efforts, you can't fault her for aiming high.

Weaknesses: Preternaturally appears to be 14 years old. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the "sucking a lemon" face. Doesn't exactly strike us as a people person.

Sound off with your picks for "X Factor" judges in the comments below!

‘There is not a sliver of truth to Star magazine’s story,’ married Food Network star says in a statement.

Pip and James Massone are sent packing, while Cee Lo performs new Goodie Mob single.
By John Mitchell

The quarterfinals continued Monday night (April 23) on "The Voice" with the eight members of Teams Cee Lo and Adam taking the stage to sing for America's vote, and two contestants were sent home by their judges' instant eliminations.

You know times have changed when Carson Daly — former host of MTV's teenage staple "TRL" — is the adult in the room, as he was at the start of the show when a little juvenile humor distracted the coaches. After Adam and Cee Lo had a tough time getting through their opening remarks about the seriousness of the competition without laughing, Carson got Cee Lo to confess that the panel was laughing because he was, well, a little gassy. "Well, this is live TV," Carson observed with what sounded like a little bit of disappointment in his voice. (Right?) The night's first two performances set the bar high for the rest. First up was favorite Jamar Roger, singing Bon Jovi's "It's My Life." While rehearsing the song, Jamar told Cee Lo his "Just a Thought" helped him through an especially hard time in his life, when he was getting clean from drugs and learned he was HIV-positive. The obvious bond between the two made Cee Lo's words of praise in the theater all the more moving. "I want to pause for a moment and listen to the love," Cee Lo said to a teary-eyed Rogers of the audience's wild reaction. "That's your love." Katrina Parker, who was saved earlier in the competition by her coach Adam, turned up the glam factor in a purple gown and loose waves for her powerful performance of "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri. (Can you even believe it was only two months ago that we were introduced to a shy insurance office worker?) She sounded great and won raves from each of the judges. Cee Lo agreed with Blake that this performance was like "hearing you for the very first time," adding, "You look exceptionally beautiful, your voice sounded equally flawless." Adam summed it up by calling Parker's performance "flawless." Cee Lo kicked it old-school right from the beginning with Daly's black-and-white, '50s game show host-style intro for his team performance of "Dancing in the Streets." When the lights came up, Cee Lo and his teammates were inside a vintage TV set before busting out onto a stage lit up with vivid colored polka dots and stripes. Cee Lo even tossed on a wig for the occasion. The weird and cool energy (and colors, come to think of it) was reminiscent of Cee Lo's Muppet-heavy 2011 Grammy performance of "Forget You," and every time the camera cut to the other judges, they were eating it up. Mathai's performance of "I'm Like a Bird" was more notable for Aguilera's dissing of Adam for not paying enough attention to all elements of his team's staging — none of the judges, even Adam, cared for an odd bit of choreography — and getting booed for elaborating a little too honestly on how much more she preferred Parker's performance. Team Cee Lo's James Massone carried his clean-cut lady killer act a little too far into '60s boy-band territory, crooning Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" staged like a teenybopper movie with Massone singing below a girl's window. Blake and Xtina didn't love it, but Adam saw what Cee Lo was going for, something "like a young Sinatra, like an old-school heartthrob." Thankfully, Cee Lo jumped back in to liven things up with his reunited Goodie Mob, performing their new single "Fight to Win." Just when you thought the performance would be low-key by Cee Lo standards — you know, just the band clad in gold armor and capes, with a set of light-up stairs, pillars and lots of fog — they zoomed in on Cee Lo and his bandmates' mouths, which lit up bright with some kind of mouthpiece. After Tony Lucca's last performance, Christina commented that she thought he was coasting on his easy acoustic-rocker style and the bit of celebrity that comes with having co-starred with her on "The Mickey Mouse Club," and his desire to prove her wrong and "stare down" his "Mickey Mouse" past pushed him to remix Britney Spears' " … Baby One More Time" as a rip-roaring rock song. His electric take on Spears' bubblegum classic won all the judges over, including (finally!) Xtina, who called for an "MMC" reunion and cheered on how he made the song his own. Saved previously by Cee Lo, Cheesa took a risk, performing the late Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." Those are big vocal shoes to fill, and she delivered. "You still managed to do your own thing with it," Christina raved, before declaring, "This week, Team Cee Lo is where it's at." Sorry, Adam! Next up, preppy Pip showed off his piano skills with his reliably capable, definitely theatrical (we agree with Adam) but unremarkable performance of "Somewhere Only We Know," and Juliette Simms' shredded growl was perfect for Aerosmith's "Cryin'," even if the wings she wore weren't our favorite accessories of the evening. Adam jumped behind the drums for his team's performance of "Instant Karma," and unlike the other joint coach/team performances, Levine let his team lead this one. His four remaining contestants took turns with the lead vocal, while Pip played keyboard and Tony strummed his ever-present guitar. But two had to go, leaving Cee Lo and Adam with a tough decision to make. Ever the diplomat, Cee Lo wrote a nice speech for his team, addressing how difficult this is for him and how much he supports each of them and read it off his phone. He decided to send James Massone packing, and the young Boston guy took it pretty well. (But it's pretty impossible to get mad at Cee Lo, right?) Adam was admittedly less elegant with his words and ultimately decided to send home Pip, who seemed at first a little surprised but bowed out gracefully. What did you think of the eliminations? Let us know in the comments.

Vocal issues are to blame, but singer/songwriter still plans to release his Born and Raised album on May 22.
By Jocelyn Vena

John Mayer's road to recovery has hit a snag. Just weeks after revealing his dates for a spring tour, the singer announced Friday (March 9) that he'd no longer be able to hit the road due to a new spate of vocal problems.

"During rehearsal on Tuesday, it came to mind that I should see my throat doctor because something didn't feel/sound right. I went in for a visit on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal cords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed. This is bad news," he wrote on his Tumblr. "Because of this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down."

He then went on to describe what the condition is, writing, "A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it's in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there's no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it's one giant pain in the ass."

For now, he says his album, Born and Raised, is still slated to be released May 22. Earlier this month he released his first single, "Shadow Days."

"I'm pretty emotionally burnt out at the moment, but please know how hard I tried to resolve this and how disappointed I am that I can't perform this record yet. I'm completely bummed, especially for all of you who started making plans to see a show. Nothing feels worse than having to break the stage down before the performance, and I mean nothing," he wrote. "I love this band you were going to hear, I love the guys and girls I work with, and the only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it's a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances. So these are the new circumstances, and I'll find a way to make it mean something. That's all you can ever do."

In the post, he also revealed that while Born and Raised has yet to drop, he feels inspired to start work on his next album — but only after he seeks treatment for his vocal condition. "I'm going to begin writing the next album very soon," he wrote. "I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there's no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring. Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence, so I hope you'll understand that I have to really pick that date carefully."

Share your well-wishes for John's vocal recovery in the comments below.

Above the Buzz examines how these former pop princesses serve as examples of how stars can re-brand themselves again and again.
By Jocelyn Vena

Both Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson dominated headlines this week. Not since the late '90s have these two duked it out for so much media coverage.

However there's a remarkable difference in what's happening today to what was happening then: Then, everyone was talking about their music and their pop star personas. Where Britney was a Lolita who proclaimed virginity while dancing provocatively in belly-baring tops, Jessica was innocent and sweet and didn't dare anger her minister daddy. Jessica released songs that put her big voice on display, and Brit focused on songs that put eyes on her dazzling dance moves and her ear for dance beats.

A lot has changes in the years since then. What's interesting is that, despite their seemingly different personalities, in retrospect, they have a lot more in common than was initially apparent: They are both down-home country girls who have built empires that few can touch. Both have had very public career highs met with very public personal lows. Both have loved boy banders. Both have even documented their lives on reality shows, albeit with very different outcomes.

With almost 15 years separating the women they are now from those girls they were then, it seems they are looking to change it up.

At a time where the pop world is filled with plenty of younger pop princesses looking for their time to shine, Britney and Jessica seem comfortable enough with their own musical legacies to let them all have their moments. And, they should be at ease. They have both been incredibly successful in that world, having sold millions of albums, had huge radio singles and made music that is uniquely their own. And while Simpson has let her music take a back seat to other projects in the past few years, Spears is still a working singer who sells out tours and tops the charts.

These days, Jessica seems focused on maintaining the post-pop star second act she launched several years back. She's a fashion mogul with a billion-dollar empire that has outfitted fashionistas with reasonably priced essentials like platforms and bags. She also judges up-and-coming fashion talent on NBC's "Fashion Star," sharing with new designers her own wisdom on breaking into the industry. But, always savvy enough to keep people guessing, she's expanded her brand even further.

Now, she is also the latest mommy mogul. Jessica just added another gig to her post-pop star career — that of the A-list mom. Just this week, she welcomed her first child, Maxwell Drew, into the world. We expect she'll use that experience to re-launch herself yet again. We should expect fashion lines for stylish toddlers. And who wouldn't want to see a reality show that follows the new mom and her family?

It seems that, like Simpson, Spears might be looking to take a break from music for a moment. Having already given birth to two sons and tried her hand at the worlds of fashion and beauty, Spears is now a frontrunner to judge "X Factor." Her own experiences in the industry certainly make her the perfect candidate to give advice on the ups and downs of pop superstardom. She's experienced both with the entire world watching. While Spears' other projects (clothing line, fragrances) have generally been overshadowed by her music career, this rumored gig might be the first one to take the attention away from her pop fame while using it for all it's worth.

Spears is probably up for the gig because she is basically the heir to the Madonna legacy. She truly understands how to be a pop star. And the rumors that she might join Simon Cowell on the show seem to be intriguing Spears' critics and non-devotees more than anything she's done in the past few years. Spears might have found her perfect next chapter.

Right now, it's unclear how these new career paths will shape the future for Simpson and Spears — musically and otherwise. But, as has always been the case for them, no one doubts they will redefine what it means to be a female pop star. They are women who aren't willing to go quietly into the night. For Spears and Simpson, it seems they want it all or nothing. And, who can blame them?

What would you like to see Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson do next? Share your thoughts below!

He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information.

TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial.

"This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian told TMZ. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him."

Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That's what we're focusing on right now, and we'll deal with an appeal after that."

Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday, but due to overcrowding, he's unlikely to serve his full term.

Pop star is featured in the trio’s 100th digital short alongside Usher, Natalie Portman, Justin Timberlake.
By Jocelyn Vena

While Justin Timberlake has always been cool about putting his junk in a box, another Justin, with the last name Bieber, was less comfortable singing about his own stuff in a "Saturday Night Live" digital short.

Playing the part of Lonely Islander Akiva Schaffer, alongside Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg, the teen pop superstar helped the comedy trio celebrate their 100th digital short. The skit opens with the three guys, including Bieber, who confuses the name Akiva for the sound of a sneeze, introducing their A-lister-filled skit, complete with appearances from Timberlake, Michael Bolton, Usher, Jon Hamm, Will Ferrell and Natalie Portman, as well as character cameos from Shy Ronnie, Jack Sparrow and Sergio the Sax Man, to name a few.

In tuxes, the three Lonely Island guys (with Akiva as imagined by Bieber) dance around congratulating themselves on the achievement, listing off all the ways they will celebrate (pilates included!). But, as it turns out, Bieber will do anything but he won't do that. And, what exactly is that? Well, you see the guys want to "suck our own d—s."

Bieber's response? "That's disgusting."

While Bieber stands as a highlight, so do the Timberlake and Portman cameos in the sketch. Timberlake was back, d—s in boxes and all. Meanwhile, Portman, holding a doll baby, got her gangster rapper on again, proclaiming, "Yeah I had a baby, but I'm still crazy."

As the short nears its wacky end, Bieber shares, "I was tricked into doing this. I don't endorse this song. No, no, no, no." Of course as he says this, Hamm as Sergio air humps around him.

In the end, all of the characters get in a room and the guys (with Akiva now in for Akiva) once again share that they will celebrate the way they always intended: by sucking whatever it is they want to, 100 times.

Saturday night's episode was hosted by former "SNL" star Will Ferrell with musical guest (and Bieber's mentor) Usher on hand. The finale airs this week with Rolling Stones leading man Mick Jagger hosting.

What's your favorite Lonely Island digital short? Re-formed British rock band ‘honoured’ to serve as openers on European leg of Gaga’s tour, which kicks off August 14 in Bulgaria.

Perhaps looking for some actual Heavy Metal Lovers, Lady Gaga has tapped reunited British rockers the Darkness as the opening act on the first — though we're willing to bet not last — leg of her Born This Way Ball, which kicks off August 14 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Darkness confirmed the news Tuesday morning (April 10) on their official site (which, in a very Darkness move, is called TheActualDarkness.com), writing that they were "honoured [British spelling, extra classy] to announce their addition to the bill as main support for Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball tour 2012."

The glammy, hammy rockers — best known for theatrical hits like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and "Growing on Me" — burned bright before imploding in 2006, but announced a reunion (and plans for a new album) just last year. Singer’s 21 will bump down a notch next week to make room for Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball.
By Gil Kaufman

Adele got so comfortable sitting in the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart during the first 10 weeks of 2012 that we started to forget anyone else could knock her off the perch. But after 23 non-consecutive weeks in the pole position dating back to last year and a board-running sprint for every chart week of the year so far, her good thing will come to an end next week when Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball edges her out of the top position.

Sure, she came in at just 1,300 copies below the Boss at #2, and there's a good chance she'll be back in the hunt for #1 in the near future, but with a pause in the action, now is as good a time as any to take another look at her incredible run.

Some 21 facts:

» Her 23 non-consecutive weeks at #1 put Adele just one week short of the chart domination of two classic soundtracks: Prince's Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever.

» Though she'll have to start over now, Adele was closing in on another all-time chart record: the most consecutive weeks at #1 by an album by a female solo act. That record still belongs to Carole King's Tapestry, which did it back in 1971 by running the board for 15 weeks. (Whitney Houston's "Bodyguard" soundtrack actually stayed in the #1 slot for 20 consecutive weeks, but that was not strictly a solo album.)

» Adele absolutely destroyed the record for the biggest post-Grammy sales boost in history when 21 moved 733,000 copies the week after she took home her six-pack of statues in February.

» The last album to hold the #1 spot before Springsteen took it was Michael Bublé's Christmas, which edged out Adele during the week ending December 25. So far, she's sold more than 8 million copies of 21, including more than 2 million in 2012 alone.

» During the course of her 55-week run on the charts, Adele has only fallen out of the top five once. In fact, she's been in the #1 or #2 spot in all but 17 of those weeks.

Drake and Rick Ross play up each other’s upcoming albums.
By Rob Markman

LOS ANGELES — Trying to determine something as subjective as what constitutes a hip-hop classic is an impossible task, but there are a few albums that are widely recognized crown-holders. Among them are the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, and it is in this same regard that Drake holds Rick Ross' upcoming fifth album.

"This guy right here," Drake said motioning to Ross as the two sat at Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV release party Sunday, "That God Forgives I Don't; the only way I can describe it is like Doggystyle or Ready to Die or Clipse Lord Willin' or any of the albums that I collected and held on to as a kid — whether it was cassette or CD."

Drake's measure may not be an objective one, but it isn't farfetched, considering that many have credited Ross with improving as an artist with each album he puts out. As of now, the album is still being recorded and only a select few have been able to hear it.

DJ Khaled also sang Rozay's praises when MTV News interviewed him back in July. "I can't give you too much because I'm going to let him do that, because that's his project, but I could tell you right now it's classic and he is talking that talk."

The Bawse isn't the only one with an album dropping soon. On October 24, Drake plans to release his sophomore LP, but the Bawse has already gotten a sneak peek. "I feel extremely grateful to hear a bulk of Take Care. Just to hear this man's tone of voice and the sh– that he's saying is just so visual," Ross said. "And if you're a true Drake fan — if you love his first album, this one right here, this sh– is uncut."

Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Selena Gomez also make fashion splash on red carpet, as showgirl style rules at the Las Vegas event on Sunday night.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all.

Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit.

Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way.

Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories.

While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress.

The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket.

Which stars' styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.

‘You know, the whole album is just so different, there’s so many different people collaborating,’ Bieber says of Believe.
By James Dinh

Justin Bieber has added yet another A-list chart-topper to the collaboration roster for his new album Believe. Speaking with Capital FM earlier this week, the Biebster announced that he's hit the studio with his very own "Punk'd" victim Taylor Swift.

"You know, the whole album is just so different, there's so many different people collaborating," the 18-year-old pop star said of the upcoming release. Aside from name-dropping a few hip-hop heavyweights like Kanye West and Drake, the singer revealed that he penned a tune with Swift, admitting the cut will have a country vibe.

"It's crazy," Bieber explained. "I mean I even wrote a song with Taylor Swift, so the whole album ranges differently."

With the string of features, JB emphasized that the LP will have a mix of sounds, saying, "With my music, it doesn't only stay in a box. It's so out there. Everything is so different and that's why I'm so happy with this album."

No word on whether Swift's vocals will appear on the tune in addition to her writing credit.

Bieber's collabo with the singer/songwriter shouldn't be too much of a shock for fans. Late last year, the duo hit the stage together for Swift's L.A. gig on her Speak Now trek. Most recently, Swift was the subject of one of Bieber's "Punk'd" shenanigans when he convinced the singer she ruined a wedding.

Who else would you like to see Justin collaborate with on Believe? Tell us your suggestions below!

Mystikal, Birdman, Cory Gunz and others help Weezy kick off his Mountain Dew partnership in Austin.
By Nadeska Alexis

YMCMB. Trukfit. DeWeezy. And repeat. When Lil Wayne took over the Austin Music Hall for his SXSW show in Texas on Thursday night, the rapper-turned-skateboarder had the venue draped in banners upon banners, shouting out his team, his new clothing line and his new partnership with Mountain Dew.

Earlier in the day, Wayne invited his pro skateboard friends — including Paul Rodriguez and Theotis Beasley — to get their grind on on the top floor of the venue while the Mountain Dew-sponsored show was being prepped. By showtime later that night, the boys were all freshly prepped for their closing appearance at the concert.

(For photos from the concert, click here.)

And while Wayne saved his skateboard family to wrap the night, his YMCMB family members came out to open the show and made brief appearances throughout his set. U.K. singer Jay Sean hit the stage early, along with Lil Chuckee and recent Cash Money signee Mystikal, who gave the crowd a taste of his hits including "Here I Go" and "Shake Ya Ass." Wayne finally hit the stage around 12:30 a.m., decked out in his Trukfit gear, with skateboard in hand, bringing a burst of energy for fans who'd already started a few "Weezy" chants in anticipation of his performance. He kicked things off with "I'm Goin' In" and "A Milli," with head banging and dreads flying everywhere.

During his one-hour set, Wayne gave the crowd some words of inspiration on falling and getting back up. "Life is like skateboarding," he said. He later dropped another one-liner, "It's not what you do, it's how you do it," admitting to the crowd that they'd just participated in a commercial shoot for his new DeWeezy campaign with Mountain Dew.

With that out of the way, there were still plenty of hits left to go around, including "She Will" and "Blunt Blowin'," plus a few more guest appearances. Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga were all noticeably absent from the show, but after giving them a shout-out, Wayne brought out a few more YMCMB members including Shanell, Bow Wow, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine and Birdman, who performed his single "Y.U. Mad."

Despite Drake's absence, Wayne delivered his verse on "The Motto" and saved Tha Carter IV single "6 Foot, 7 Foot" for the finale. Maybe the most surprising cameo of the night came from rapper Cory Gunz, who was recently arrested for gun possession. The young Gunz joined Wayne and his crew of pro skateboarders onstage to assist on the track before calling it a night.

Singer tells Lucky magazine she and Eric Johnson haven’t started shopping for their wedding: ‘I have not put a single dress on.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Jessica Simpson sparkles on the December cover of Lucky magazine, and while she may not be dishing on becoming a mom in the issue, she does open up about planning her wedding, letting everyone know she's in no rush to walk down the aisle.

"I haven't started shopping for our wedding yet," she tells the magazine. "When I got engaged, everyone thought I would get married immediately, but I have not put a single dress on, and by the time this comes out, I will not be married! We're just enjoying being engaged right now, and that's honest."

Photos: Jessica Simpson's budding baby bump!

Simpson and former football player Eric Johnson got engaged last year, and on Monday, she broke the news that the couple is expecting their first child together. "When I met him, I just felt so comfortable with myself and where I was in my life that if he didn't want to be part of it, he didn't have to be," she explains about her feelings on love when she and Johnson first started dating. And she says that these days, she's driven by a whole new set of ambitions — none of which has to with life as a celebrity.

"I'm not looking for more fame or money," the mom-to-be adds. "I am very secure in those areas."

The singer/actress/mogul also talks a bit about the chatter around her figure, saying that despite any criticism she might receive for her curves, "I like the way I look."

"Everybody fluctuates, but I'm open about my weight, and I'm still confident. I didn't cry about it too much," she explains. "I got so much scrutiny for putting on extra pounds, but I think that the decision not to make myself anorexic was actually great for branding. Because when you're really, really skinny, not everybody can relate to you. All kinds of women started coming up to me and saying what an example I was setting by not constantly dieting."
